Kobalt Tool Box Locks

[Take heed of added notes below from 2/19/14 & 9/5/14]

Pictured is a Kobalt brand tool box lock. When in the unlocked position (as shown), one pushes the face of the lock to open the tool box. Conversely, when it's in the locked position, one can still push the face of the lock but it will not engage the latching mechanism.

To fit the Kobalt Tool Box Lock:
  • Remove the screw from behind the lock (AFTER noting its relative position to being locked or unlocked).

  • The plug will be easy to remove from the housing (take caution not to lose any of the wafer "tumblers").

  • The blank that this specimen used was a Taylor X103 (KA14). It had a code number of "BB02" on the front (nothing found in our Reed's Code Program). Cuts were gauged at 31231 using the following specs
  • 1st cut-- .225
  • Spacing-- .095
  1. .260
  2. .240
  3. .220
[New Note (2/19/14): a "BB01" was duplicated on an X103 (KA14), but was rough going into the lock until it was ground a little bit on both sides; NEXT TIME, try this on the X69 (YH37) and verify whether or not grinding is even necessary.]
[New Note (9/5/14): a "BB04" was duplicated on an X69 (YH37), was still rough going into the lock until it was ground a little bit on both sides as before with the X103 (KA14); may need to find a different blank to try on this.]

  • Once the key is cut, reverse the process to put the lock back together. At the time of this writing, $20 was figured for labor with $3.99 + tax per key.
