Friant D/S Desk Lock Keys

This first picture is of a "W012" key for a Friant brand desk lock:

Specs for cutting these by code (usually done by decoding the lock as we do not have en entire series on record yet):

• Blank# Taylor# X114 (Ilco# DA24)
  
  • 1st-- .100
  • Spcg-- .090  [.100 - .190 - .280 - .370 - .460 - .550 (- .640 - .730)] 
    • 1- .260
    • 2- .240
    • 3- .220
    • (the 7th cut at .640 would either be for giving a reference point to trim the tip of the key [using a "2" depth] or to provide a control cut for an extractor key, at which point the 8th cut at .730 would be the reference point for trimming the tip of the key)

Duplication can be achieved by shaving ~.008" off of both sides of the blank (using the Framon machine, thus bringing the blank to a .260" width) and lining the original and key blank along the bottom of the chucks.

Key Operated Hasps (#142)

 Here is a picture of a key we've dealt with many times before: a key, working a key operated hasp, that looks like a thinner Timberline(TM) brand key (Ilco# 1043J).  A customer brought one of these locks in to us, requesting 8 copies, and this gave us an opportunity to discover a good match for this key (one pict of the lock is down below)[when a brand for this is discovered, PLEASE make note of this].

Lusterful(TM) brand D/S Office Furniture Keys

Below is a pict of a sample Lusterful^TM brand furniture key (#308):

Below is a blank with which we are experimenting, a Taylor X115 (DA23), modified by cutting ~.010" off of both sides to make it ~.252" in width.

Durable Key Box Keys

This is a "Durable" brand mounted key box.  It uses a key that looks like THIS one:
























The Federal Reserve Bank of St Louis is using these and has requested copies be made of them.  At the time of this writing it was found that the Taylor #117 (Ilco #YH48) will work if ~.033 of an inch is shaved off of both sides of the key.  Here are pictures of the keys we worked with:

Door King (DKS) Panel Box Key

Here are two views of a DKS "84 16120" key from the St Louis Public Library and a blank we tried to use to match with it, a Dominion lock #80N (part of the Fort 6000 series, original# K80N).  Currently, we have yet to see if this blank actually works, please follow up with this note when more information is received.

UPDATE (6Mar'14): It worked, they wanted 7 more(!).

Chelsea, Regent, and Saratoga Mailbox Locks ("Architectural Mailboxes")

UPDATE (7/30/14): somebody brought in a key to be duplicated and a sample mail box lock to try it out with.  Duke found a safe key (like the Ilco #SY4) seemed to work; more experimentation needed since this one goes for $10 each (!). 

UPDATE (10/14/14): a sample mailbox lock was brought and we had time to experiment.  We found that the Taylor #M73N blank (Ilco #HF9) will work for this blank IF ~.020 inches is cut from the bottom of the blank [you can do this by setting it in the Framon machine bottom side up (as far as the mills will let it go in; do NOT allow it to bottom out) and cutting across the bottom to a height of .271"].

Specs for cutting to factory specs (as we have no code series for this...yet):

• 1st cut: .190"
• Spacing: .119"

Towards the end of January 2014, somebody brought in a "mailbox key" to be duplicated.  After much searching we happened upon an old Taylor# T66W blank (replaced by Ilco's # TP3 [note from 10/2/14: Ilco's TP3 blank does NOT work very well with this, unless it is ground down on both sides, the same being true for the AG1 blank suggested by IDN H Hoffman])*.  Here is what the keys look like:

*UPDATE (10/2/14): In the Fall 2014 edition of the IDN-H. Hoffman newsletter, in the article "Ask the Key Wizard", somebody asked, "What key blank should I use for a Sienna Mailbox lock?"  Their answer:"Try the Ilco AG1 which is also the SIlca AGE3."  Upon researching the Sienna mailbox lock, I found it under another company's web site with the following logo:

...which as one can see is a spitting image of the logo on the original keys in the picture above.  On the following page (http://www.architecturalmailboxes.com/products/wall-mount-mailboxes/sienna/default.aspx), I found a picture of one of their mailbox locks in use (and you can see it looks similar to the ones we have pictured later on in this article), along with a list of "Wall Mount Mailbox" models which included "Chelsea", "Regent", "Saratoga", and "Siena".

When it is found whether or not Ilco's AG1 works on this mailbox, PLEASE make note of it here.
